Short Term Rental Ordinance 
To Take Effect at Midnight July 9th 2018


The city of Charleston’s new Short Term Rental (STR) Ordinance will take effect as of midnight July 9th 2018 . The ordinance, adopted by City Council in April, establishes clear STR eligibility guidelines within Charleston’s historic districts. The ordinance also provides the city with the infrastructure it needs to effectively monitor compliance.

Buyers are holding out hope in peak real estate season, but against the inventory squeeze, their confidence was shaken this spring, according to the National Association of REALTORS® (NAR).

The amount of buyers confident in their housing market prospects stalled at 68 percent, according to NAR’s Housing Opportunities and Market Experience (HOME) second quarter survey—identical to the first quarter’s share, also 68 percent. Department of Planning, Preservation & Sustainability to Host Short Term Rental Application Workshop

The department of Planning, Preservation, and Sustainability will host two open house workshops where citizens can meet with city staff to review the process of applying for Short Term Rental permits under the new ordinance, which seeks to more broadly regulate the practice throughout all areas of the city and goes into effect on July 10, 2018.

 

The first workshop will be held on Thursday, June 21 from 5 to 7 p.m. in Ballroom 1 at the Gaillard Center (2 George Street), and the second on Monday, June 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the first floor Public Meeting Room at the Gaillard Center.
